DonorsChoose.org

DonorsChoose.org provides teachers an opportunity to fund a classroom project.  Teachers log on to DonorsChoose.org and submit requests for materials or experiences students need to learn. Individuals search and partially or fully fund these requests by their interests, and then receive photos and thank-you notes from the classroom they supported. CEA President Lois Stanton was presented with a gift certificate for $150 which she has used to help fund a CCPS project!  There were several Chesterfield proposals online, but there should be more! The press release says, “Founded in 2000 by a young high school teacher, DonorsChoose.org has been recognized as “ America’s most innovative charity” by the Stanford Business School and Amazon.com. Over 31,400 public school teachers nationwide have used the site to secure funding for $14.9 million in books, art supplies, technology and other resources that their students need and use for enhanced learning opportunities.

Member Benefit Updates

The Virginia Education Association recently announced a new member benefit. Through an exclusive agreement with Springdale at Lucy Corr Village, a new continuing care retirement community (CCRC) in Chesterfield County, Association members and their parents, grandparents and other extended family members can earn special discounts and service upgrades worth more than $10,000. Among those benefits are fee waivers, additional health care privileges, computer services, free options, and even refunds on Association dues. For more information, click http://www.veaweteach.org and look for “ A Place to Call Home.”

More Good News…!  California Casualty has taken a rate reduction of 5% (average) on all auto insurance policies effective 12/1/07.  The reductions vary by area and coverage type.  Rates have remained competitive in Virginia over the last six years since the implementation of the NEA Members Auto & Home Insurance Program.  For existing customers, the rate reduction will go into effect at their renewal.  Also, a new discount has been added.  The College Graduate Scholastic Achievement Discount will allow college students to retain their Good Student Discount until they reach 25 years old or are married.  This is an excellent benefit for new teachers!

We now have a 20% discount at the Park ‘N Go parking lot for the Richmond airport.  This is the parking lot to the right immediately upon exit from Interstate 64.  All you have to do is identify yourself as a VEA person upon exit.  In the event they should ask you for VEA identification, please carry a VEA membership card.  The current parking price is $6.99 (discount of $1.40) per day.  The cost will be less than the other airport parking lots.  Park ‘N Go provides shuttle service to and from the airport. You can also get a frequent parker card which provides free parking days/hours after sufficient use.  Please ask for the card as you exit. This is available to all MEMBERS. Please use the Park ‘N Go parking lot when asking for reimbursement for Richmond airport parking related to VEA business.
